Tue Mar 12 04:32:31 GMT 2013

Call for Papers: Media Sociology ASA Preconference

We invite submissions for a one day conference on media sociology to
be held at NYU’s Institute of Public Knowledge on Friday, August 9,
2013 (the day before the annual meeting of the American Sociological
Association). To encourage a wide range of submissions, we have no
prespecified theme and invite both theoretical and empirical papers on
any topic related to sociology of mediated communication and media
broadly construed (beyond news media). Submissions from graduate
students and junior scholars are particularly welcome.

Media sociology has long been a highly diverse field spanning many
topics, methodologies, and units of analysis. It encompasses the news
media, entertainment media, as well as new and digital media. Although
outstanding research exists within the different subfields, which we
may group in political economy and institutions, culture, and
technology, this conference aims to create dialogue among these
disparate traditions. Besides expanding knowledge and understanding,
our hope is that this dialogue will facilitate our organizational goal
of forming a Media Sociology section in the ASA.

Papers may be on a variety of topics including, but not limited to:
● production processes and/or media workers
● political economy (including the role of the state and markets)
● media and the public sphere
● media content
● globalization of media
● the Internet, social media, cellular phones, or other technology
● the digital divide
● new uses of media
● media effects of media consumption
● identity, the self, and media

Invited Speakers
We are pleased to confirm the following invited guest speakers: The
conference will feature an invited keynote by Dhiraj Murthy (Bowdoin
College) and a panel addressing the theme, “Mapping the Field of Media
Sociology” with additional participants Andrea Press (University of
Virginia), Michael Schudson (Columbia University), and Eleanor
Townsley (Mount Holyoke College).
