CFP: SIEF panel on Circulation and social imaginaries in the media: a
methodological perspective

Tartu, Estonia; 30th June - 4th July

Circulation and social imaginaries in the media: a methodological perspective

In the history of cultural and social sciences the idea of circulation
has stimulated much discussion among thinkers such as Mauss
(1924/1990), Lévi-Strauss (1958), Marx (1885/1974), Sahlins (1972,
1976) and Hall (1980) and their followers. A common interest of
anthropology and political economy alike has been to examine
circulation as a cultural practice and/or system of exchange through
which individuals establish social bonds and/or cultural systems
through an exchange of people, goods and messages.

In recent years the discussion around circulation has moved towards
new contexts of research. Intensification of media-saturation and
media-related social, cultural, political and economic relations, have
gained new relevance in understanding contemporary society in
anthropology and related fields. In these circumstances the meanings
of media messages, visual images and virtual texts are disengaged from
their original contexts. Circulation in this context describes the
flows of mediated items, ideas, and actors travelling materially
and/or immaterially from one location and site to another.

This panel examines circulation as a methodological concept. The
attempt is to describe the media-saturated social dynamics on the
move. The panel invites papers that look into dynamics of circulation
in the media. Following themes could be addressed: (i) How does media
take part in the circulation of different cultural practices? (ii)
What kind of social and cultural relations emerge from encounters
between different circulating actors, elements, organisms and
institutions? (iii) How are social imaginaries established,
reinforced, negotiated or questioned in these circulating encounters?
