[ecrea] CFP: Nordmedia 2013 Media, Globalization and Social Change Division

Tue Dec 18 07:21:56 GMT 2012

NORDMEDIA 2013, Oslo

Call for Papers Nordmedia 2013 Media, Globalization and Social Change Division

This division encompasses a wide range of theoretical approaches and
empirical areas of study. What unites them is an ambition to
investigate communication, media cultures, media institutions,
ideologies, texts or individuals with an international or global
perspective.

In the increasingly globalized world, the media constitute significant
points in the cohesion within and between societies, while they also
may serve as tools of control at a variety of levels. Human rights
such as freedom of expression and media freedom remain areas of
contention. Processes of migration may alter the make-up of states and
the media therein, and give rise to new forms of communication for
instance in diaspora networks and via social media.

Critical approaches within communication for social change aim to
combine approaches in areas as varied as health, democracy and good
governance studies. Despite seemingly all-encompassing globalization
processes, counter processes may challenge the situation, while the
position of the individual may be at stake.

This division accepts both panel proposals and abstracts for
individual papers. We encourage both empirical and theoretical
contributions that critically discuss the various themes of this
division. We accept micro and macro studies, single-country studies or
cross-cultural comparisons. Themes may include, but are not limited
to, the study of processes of globalization and social change in a
wide sense, for instance within media organizations, media texts,
publics or counter publics. Challenges from grassroots levels, local,
national, regional and diaspora initiatives may be other approaches.
Migration studies, the situation for ethnic minority media, social
media, and tensions between minority and majority media and cultures
are yet other themes that may be addressed here.
