[ecrea] PhD Bursaries at Portsmouth

Dear all, we have been awarded 2 PhD fees only bursaries at the 
University of Portsmouth  (unfortunately we have been given a very short 
space of time for applications to be in -  7th January).

One is in the area of European funding bodies and 'World' Cinema -

Transformation in funding networks has taken place over the last 20 -25 
years and many films from all over the world owe their existence to 
European funding bodies. The PhD student should elucidate this 
transformation, and study sources of funding and their effects. The 
appropriate theoretical framework will be determined by the team, but 
the student will be expected to engage with transnational film theories 
and development theory.

The student would consider the general European funding landscape, and 
would select one or more case studies from the major European funding 
bodies. Funding bodies/programmes the student could select to focus on 
include: the Hubert Bals Fund; Cinéfondation; the World Cinema Fund; 
Fonds Sud; Aide aux Cinemas du Monde (World Cinema Aid); Ibermedia, and 
Eurimages.

Applicants will have a good first degree (minimum 2.1 or equivalent) and 
ideally a Masters in a relevant subject area. An interest in 
transnational film theory and development theory and a 
language/languages in the primary areas of research would be a distinct 
advantage.

The other is in the area of British music video:

This doctoral study will examine the relationship between capital and 
culture in the British music video industry. It will trace the origins 
of companies established to exploit the potential of the 'pop promo' in 
the late 1970s, and will follow the paths of film-making talent through 
the nascent industry and the establishment of MTV as the premier 
exhibition site for music video (1981-1995). Its aims are threefold. 
Firstly, it will conduct an industrial survey in order to map patterns 
of cross-over in respect of corporate structures and individual labour, 
whilst acknowledging and accounting for the distinctive models of 
creative agency which have arisen within the music video sector. 
Secondly, it will consider the relationship between music video, film 
and television in terms of creative practices, aesthetic influences and 
broadcast formats. Thirdly, by compiling a comprehensive annotated 
catalogue of the output of one British production company, it will 
present a detailed case study as a model for future critical work in the 
field, and provide the company with unique meta-data on its own 
commercial archive. The purpose of this study will be to map territory 
which remains uncharted (both in academic writing and in commercial 
archiving), to develop a methodology for tracing the relationship 
between capital and creativity in the industry, and to assess the 
cultural value of music video in relation to the UK's film and 
television industries
