PhD Studentship at SURF

Date: Jun 22, 2012

Universities as Cultural Intermediaries

Applications are invited for a 3 year PhD studentship at the University of Salford. The PhD student will be based in SURF and SOBE and will be jointly supervised by Professor Tim May and Dr Beth Perry.

The candidate will conduct qualitative social science / arts and humanities research that investigates the inter-relationships between communities of practice and epistemic communities, with a particular focus on the role of universities as cultural intermediaries. As an institution, the university can play an important intermediary role, bringing together elements of the private, public and third sectors as well as the wider community through attempting to find common languages, challenges and modes of working for mutual benefit.

The PhD will be suitable for candidates with a good first degree in the social sciences or arts and humanities (2.1 or better). Candidates would normally be expected to have a Masters degree in a related area, with evident experience in research methods at that level.

The studentship is funded through the AHRC Cultural Intermediation: Connecting Communities in the Creative Urban Economy project. The project is a collaboration between Salford University and the Universities of Birmingham, Birmingham City, City, Cardiff and Liverpool John Moores. Therefore, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to contribute to a vibrant interdisciplinary and inter-institutional project and engage with a broader set of debates.

The studentship will cover the cost of UK/EU fees and includes a bursary of £13,590 p.a.
