[ecrea] Call for Chapters - Journalism and Diaspora in the Era of Media Convergence
Wed Jan 18 08:27:25 GMT 2012
Reminder Call for Book Chapters: Journalism and Diaspora in the Era of
Media Convergence
Edited by Dr Ola Ogunyemi, University of Lincoln, UK.
The book is planned for publication in 2013 by Troubador Publishing Co.
The Media of Diaspora Research Group (MDRG) announces a call for
chapters on topics related to journalism practices by diasporic groups
around the world. There is a clear gap in literature about the
perspectives of the practitioners of media of diasporas on professional
values; about what goes on in their news room; about the diversity of
their content; about their appropriation of multiplatform and about
their audiences. Moreover, scholarly interest in their journalism
practices is under- theorised because they are regarded as "...less
glamorous journalistic workplaces" (Wahl-Jorgensen& Hanitzsch, 2009, p.
12).
As a result, we have limited understanding of the contribution of media
of diaspora to "...social cohesion and building mutual understanding
across the many groups that make up modern Britain (Campion, 2009, p.
79) and about how it orientates audiences to cope with everyday life in
the host country and how it provides competing account of journalism
cultures to that of the mainstream and alternative (non-diasporic)
media.
Contributors should focus on one of the themes (i.e. production, content
and audiences) using conceptual/methodological approaches and empirical
data from the press, radio, television or Internet for, by and about
diasporic peoples.
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit a 500-word chapter
proposal by February 3, 2012. Authors will be notified of the status of
their proposal by March 5, 2012. Full chapters (7,000 words including
references) are expected to be submitted by August 31, 2012. All
submitted manuscripts will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis.
Final revised manuscripts are due on November 30, 2012. Proposal and
manuscripts should be sent electronically to the editor
(oogunyemi /at/ lincoln.ac.uk)
Members of the reviewing committee are Dr Ola Ogunyemi, UK; Dr Daniel
Muller, Germany; Prof. Ralph Negrine, UK; Ms Carmen Diop, France; and Ms
Lioba Suchenwirth, UK.
About the Media of Diaspora Research Group (MDRG): it is a network of
academics and professionals. It is based in the Lincoln School of
Journalism, University of Lincoln, with members from universities around
the world. MDRG researchers examine the articulation of social issues by
the ethnic minorities in their own media, that is, self-representation;
and examine their contribution to the diversity of the public sphere.
