Call for Papers: Culture as Critical Theory (Conference to be held at Institute of Ethnology, Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan, September 29 – October 1, 2012)

Sponsoring Institutions: Institute of Ethnology, Academia Sinica, and Institute of Social and Cultural Research, National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan

Organizer: Allen Chun (Research Fellow, Academia Sinica; Joint Professor, National Chiao Tung University)

Synopsis: The theme Culture as Critical Theory is not restricted to purely theoretical papers; we welcome contributions based on empirical research that address thematic concerns in the field of cultural studies, broadly defined, representing any (cross-)discipline in the social sciences, humanities, area studies, literary criticism, performance, arts, media studies, etc..

Objective: This conference seeks specifically to attract the participation of younger scholars, primarily PhD students completing research wishing to write up parts of their thesis as paper and recent postdocs having received their PhD in the last 2 years in the process of writing up a paper for publication based on their larger study.

Invited Keynote Speakers: Arif Dirlik (Oregon) and Claudio Lomnitz (Columbia).

Language of Communication: Papers and conference will held in English and Chinese,

Application Procedure: submit paper abstract (500 words or less) and brief resume (institutional affiliation, academic qualification, email address).  There will be a selective review process.

Available Funding: RT airfare subsidy and free lodging can be offered to a limited number of paper givers from outside Taiwan, pending acceptance of individual paper proposals.  Due to budgetary constraints, travel allowance will be limited to airfare cost within Asia.

Application Deadline: for those applying for travel subsidy, please submit abstract, personal particulars and airfare estimate by March 15; for others, please submit abstract and personal particulars by April 15.

Conference papers in full (7000-10,000 words) are due August 31 as a necessary condition of participation, in order to facilitate advance circulation to other conference participants.
