Conference 2011 =96 Call for Papers

The theme for the 2011 Conference, to be held at the National Library of Ir=
eland, Dublin, on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 November, is: =91Writing the pr=
ess into history=92. This theme examines how journalism and the press has b=
een, and can be, integrated into wider political, economic, social and cult=
ural histories. Given the growth in the number of scholars, both nationally=
 and internationally, writing about the history of journalism and the press=
 it is timely to examine critically what all this activity means for the re=
lationship between writing about the press and =91mainstream=92 national an=
d transnational histories. =20

Topics that conference papers might address include:=20

The role of the press in politics and diplomacy
=20
The journalist as historian or as participant / witness to historical event=
s
=20
The business of newspapers&  periodicals as part of the wider economy=20
=20
Journalistic biography / autobiography=20
=20
The press as participant in, or its impact on, historical events

Writing press history=20
=20
Using newspapers and periodicals as a source for historical research=20

The press and global / transnational history=20
=20
=20
There will be a special open session during the conference for early stage =
researchers, at which emerging scholars, who are researching any aspect of =
newspaper, periodical or journalism history, may present their research.
