Excellent research assessments, growing student numbers, and the
expansion of its undergraduate program enable the Journalism Department
of the Faculty of Arts to hire an assistant professor in Television
Studies / Journalism Studies. Candidates must have expertise in one of
these fields, and have preferably worked, or intend to work, at the
crossroads of these disciplines.

*The successful candidate is expected to:*

- perform teaching and supervisory tasks in the department's
International and Dutch MA programs in Journalism as well as in its
undergraduate program in Media and Journalism Studies. International
candidates will teach solely in English. Dutch candidates will teach in
both English and Dutch
- carry out and generate top research in television studies, journalism
studies or a related field
- participate actively in the Groningen Centre for Journalism Studies
and the Groningen Research Institute for the Study of Culture
- pursue research grants and other forms of external funding
- participate actively in curriculum development, course design, and
administration of the Journalism Department.


      *Qualifications:*

- a PhD in Television Studies, Media Studies or Journalism Studies
- a wide-ranging knowledge of theories and methods applied in these
fields; familiarity with cultural theories of media and communication
- teaching experience at the university level and didactic abilities
- a proven research track record, including relevant, peer-reviewed
publications
- an outstanding national and international academic network as well as
excellent contacts with professionals in the field
- willingness to make substantial contributions to the development of
the department's research and educational streams
- organisational experience and skills.

*Department of Journalism*

The Journalism Department provides a high quality, one-and-a-half year
Master in Journalism, which includes newspaper, internet, radio and
television journalism. After an extensive selection procedure, 45
students are admitted each year into the Dutch program and 15 students
into its international equivalent. Half of the curriculum is devoted to
academic courses in journalism studies while the other half is set aside
for practical skills in journalism, with a focus on cross-mediality and
convergence. The department's undergraduate (minor) program in Media and
Journalism Studies provides courses on a.o. television studies,
journalism and new media, introduction to journalism studies, and media
history to about 200 new undergraduate students each year. The staff of
the Journalism Department performs research in the fields of journalism
studies, media studies, and political communication.

*Conditions of employment:*
The University of Groningen offers a salary dependent on qualifications
and work experience starting from a minimum of € 3,195 gross per month
(salary scale 11), excluding: 8% holiday pay; 8,3% end-of-year bonus;
and participation in a pension scheme for employees. The appointment
will initially be made for a period of one year. After a positive
assessment in the first year it may be extended for two additional years.
Teaching responsibilities comprise 60% of the position, while 40% is
reserved for research.
