May I draw your attention to the forthcoming publication by Stuart Price, Reader in Media Discourse at De Montfort University

WORST-CASE SCENARIO? Governance, Mediation, and the Security Regime - Zed Books - June 2011

SEE http://www.zedbooks.co.uk/book.asp?bookdetail=4395 OR http://www.amazon.co.uk/Worst-case-Scenario-Governance-Mediation-Security/dp/1848135300

PUBLISHER'S DESCRIPTION: In this original and provocative new book, Stuart Price identifies the existence of a practice that lies at the core of the western security regime - the projection of the worst-case scenario. This consists if the description of a significant material threat, which is used to bolster the security agenda of the neo-liberal state.

Using a wide range of official sources and case studies, Price analyses the paramilitary, political, economic and cultural manoeuvres of the internal security regime as it attempts to reproduce a 'command structure' within civil society. In doing so, he demonstrates that, unlike the openly 'totalitarian' states of the past, bureaucratic rule is favoured over charismatic leadership, and the ostentatious display of coercive authority is characterised as a temporary measure.
