Two PhD Fee Waivers,

2011-2014

As part of an initiative to support new PhD students in the Department of Sociology, University of Limerick, we are inviting applicants for two PhD fee waivers. These are aimed at new applicants seeking to pursue postgraduate work in the specific areas of expertise in this dynamic and vibrant department. One of the Fee Waivers is to support PhD research on the specific topic of 'Gender, Migration and Catholic Faith-Based Organisations' and the second Fee Waiver is open to areas of research in line with departmental expertise. Applicants for the second Fee Waiver must align their proposed study with the interests and strengths of the Department of Sociology such as the sociology of health and illness; the body; the media; education; youth, community and social regeneration; gender and migration; religion; social mobility; family; the internet and social media. The recipients of the Fee Waivers will undertake 15 hours of work per semester for the department. Fee waivers will be awarded for one year in the first instance and may be renewable subject to annual review of progress. Also, in the event of the recipient receiving funding elsewhere then the Fee Waiver will revert to the department.

The Department of Sociology at UL has won numerous awards for teaching excellence and hosts varied and vigorous research activity on a broad range of themes, representing a number of different methodological traditions. It is actively involved in a range of research projects in the Institute for the Study of Knowledge and Society (ISKS) and recently co-organized the third Winter School in Social Science Research Methods. The Department of Sociology is home to /SOCHEOLAS,/ The Limerick Student Journal of Sociology. It hosts regular research seminars for Staff, Postgraduates and the wider community.
