How global should we be? How local should we remain?
Information, communication and the economy in the time of globalisation
The current economic crisis with its unknown conclusion has thrown to light
how closely intertwined today's international economies are and what effect
local crises can have around the world, not only threatening the implosion
of large economies but also threatening to throw the self-regulating market
system into question.
The focus of the plenary and section lectures will be on the diverse
interactions of the conflicting areas of economic activity, communications
and globalisation with the resulting design options.
The analogy of the mythological and historical building of the tower of
Babel and how its completion prevented confusion between speakers of
different languages raises the question of how communication processes have
to be strategically planned and implemented appropriate to the economic
situation with the processes already in place so as not to increase further
risk potentials. So closely linked issues are the use of verbal,
para-verbal, nonverbal and extra-verbal sign systems in their cultural
determinism and the influence of global and local corporations, global
organisations, national governments, legal institutions and - ultimately -
citizens' movements on the contents of the communication and application of
their codes. Modern communication technologies - with them ever faster
channels of communication and emerging media - have proved essential.
The reciprocal influences of communications and economic globalisation and
their impacts upon homo economicus and the political individual must be
discussed jointly by scientists and representatives of leading businesses
and non-profit organisations in interdisciplinary discussions. Such an
exchange between science and industry will provide impetus for the corporat=
e
communications practice and the training of students and contribute to the
discussion of recent communication problems and ensure that expected future
economical problems will not be exacerbated by communication issues.
