 with generous support from the Department of Music, Program in East
Asian Studies, Council of the Humanities, Princeton Institute for
International and Regional Studies, Lewis Center for the Arts, Program
in American Studies, and Program in African-American Studies at
Princeton University.



Special Talk and Performance: DJ Krush

We cordially
invite you to the conference, "In the Mix: Asian Popular Music," which
will take place on the campus of Princeton University on March 25–26,
2011.



This conference is comprised of presentations by 33 scholars from eight
countries, working in diverse fields including ethnomusicology, music
history, media studies, cultural studies, anthropology, linguistics, and
Asian Studies. Panels address topics including music and politics in the
 1960s and 70s, pop idols and marketing, hip-hop and language,
exoticism,  hybridity, visual media, transnationalism, Asian America,
and identity.



A special feature of this conference is a Q&A with DJ Krush—a
pioneer of Japanese hip-hop and internationally known DJ/producer, noted
 for his varied soundscapes of hip-hop beats and Japanese sonic
references—followed by a performance by DJ Krush.



There will also be two documentary films on independent rock scenes
in Beijing and Tokyo, with a Q&A with the director; a performance by
 Princeton Tora Taiko Ensemble; a taiko workshop with Kaoru Watanabe; and a performance by
Asian surf-rock group Dzian!.
