[ecrea] New Book "When Media Are New"
Sat Dec 04 21:43:23 GMT 2010
The University of Michigan Press has just published the book "When
Media Are New" by John Carey and Martin Elton. With a focus on
users, rather than on technologies, the book reviews the new media
of the last fifty years or so -- failures as well as
successes. Part I examines how new media have come to be adopted
(or rejected), why it is impossible to forecast their uptake, and
the varying problems of implementation that have occurred. Part II
provides in-depth case studies of particular media innovations.
The authors write from a transdisciplinary perspective. William
Dutton, Director of the Oxford Internet Institute at the University
of Oxford, has commented, "[It] is a key reference on the new media,
and must reading for students of the Internet - the platform for
continuing the new media revolution." Eli Noam, Professor of
Economics and Finance at the Columbia University Business School,
remarked, "What aspects of Carey and Elton's "When Media Are New"
are new? First, a sterling perspective. In a media world full of
promotional hype, journalistic credulity, and social-cultural
pessimism, the authors gracefully debunk them all. Second, useful
information. The book is chock-full of nuggets on just about every
media introduction, nicely presented and readily shared. Third,
thoughtful interpretation." And according to Russell Neuman, Evans
Professor of Media Technology at the University of Michigan, "This
transdisciplinary and accessible volume is the best book on
technology diffusion since Everett Roger's 'Diffusion of Innovations.'"
