Tue Oct 03 05:58:01 GMT 2006

>ICA 07 Preconference
>
>Co-sponsored by Philosophy of Communication,
>Intercultural Communication and Public Relations.
>
>
>Methodologies of Comparative Media Research in a
>Global Sphere: Paradigms Critique - Methods
>
>
>Date: May 23-24, 2007
>Venue: The Hilton, San Francisco
>
>
>Media and communication studies are in the
>process of transformation. Global or
>international communication delivered through
>satellite and Internet redefine conventional
>concepts of media, of the mass audience, of
>gatekeeping and agenda setting, of power
>and in fact of communication itself.
>
>Globalization concepts, paradigms of place and
>space being adopted from a variety of
>interdisciplinary discourses shape the new
>terrain of communication theories but also
>increasingly define the framework and parameters
>for research. In parallel with striking
>developments in communications technology, media
>organization and academic conceptualization,
>there are major developments in the world
>external to communications and communications
>research that pose significant challenges to
>established and emerging paradigms alike. These
>include events in the political realm, not least
>those associated with power contestations that
>currently focus on the Middle East and Central
>Asia, as well as events in the physical realm
>that include global warming and the critical depletion of natural resources.
>
>Although we have begun to debate theoretical
>implications of this emerging
>international/global communication sphere, it is
>now timely to address issues of research in this
>increasingly worldwide context. Given the
>tremendous relevance and impact of comparative
>research, it is crucial to debate and critically
>reflect methodologies. These debates are
>necessary to (1) detect new phenomena, (2)
>identify difference and relativity
>through (3) a variety of comparative research approaches.
>
>This preconference will provide a broad platform
>for the discussion of new emerging paradigms and
>methodologies relevant to todays globalized research context.
>
>We invite paper proposals in the broad areas of
>
>" Paradigms of global/international communication
>" Research methods, quantitative and
>qualitative, in studies of production, content, reception and interpretation
>" Studying communications in cultural contexts
>" Approaches to comparative research, evaluation and prognosis
>" Best practice models but also: what did not work and why ?
>" Critical approaches from dependency to
>post-colonialism, hybridity and transculturalism
>" Global media in national and local contexts
>" Crucial project management decisions in a comparative research setting
>" Problems / theories of comparability
>" Sampling of cultures/societies
>
>This preconference will serve as a platform for
>the debate of new frameworks on one hand and for
>sharing practical research experience on the other.
>
>We will also invite representatives of funding
>organizations (e.g.. Ford Foundation) and
>industry research (e.g. Saatchi & Saatchi).
>
>
>Please submit a 1000 word abstract to: (Ingrid.Volkmer /at/ stonebow.otago.ac.nz)
