Visual Delights 3

The National Fairground Archive in association with the Journal of Early
Visual Popular Culture, and Leeds University are holding Visual Delights
3: Magic and Performance, a three day conference at the University of
Sheffield from the 15 - 17th July, 2005.
The conference incorporates both academic and non-academic historians,
collectors and performers and will to bring together the worlds of
photography, film and mass visual culture to a wider and more inclusive
audience. Papers range from the history of 19th century performance, stage
crafts and special effects, illusion at the Egyptian Hall, disaster
slides, rare films from the Pathé and Méliès Collections, freakery and
magic, disaster tourism and female magicians and will include screenings
and live performances, as well as a range of papers from internationally
renowned academics and historians of visual culture.
The conference will also feature a day of magic curated by Eddie Dawes,
Historian of the Magic Circle. A specially produced limited edition
facsimile of Professor Testot's Paragraph Book from the 1830s produced by
the National Fairground Archive and the Projection Box will be available
on the Sunday. This features rare advertisements, archival bills and
newspaper reviews of Professor Testot's phantasmagoria show in England in
the 1830s. Performers include Roy Davenport, John Marshall's Girl in the
Goldfish Bowl and screenings of magic and illusion films from the
collections of the British Film Institute and the Nederlands Film Archive
with live musical accompaniment. There will also be a special performance
of local Mitchell & Kenyon films, compiled to celebrate the Centenary of
the University of Sheffield and a launch event for the new journal, Early
Popular Visual Culture.
Rates for three days including entrance to all performances and screenings
are £90 or a one-day ticket for the Magic Day on Sunday 17th July at £25.
