International conference:

Deconstructing WSIS:
Towards a sustainable agenda for the future information society

European Parliament (Brussels - Belgium)

March 1, 2004

In the wake of the first phase of the World Summit on the Information
Society (WSIS) held in Geneva last December and in waiting for its second
phase in Tunis in November 2005, many crucial questions emerge. Is WSIS a
turning point in the development of the Information Society? Or is it yet
another failed attempt to bridge the digital divide? Are international
political circles and the civil society successfully getting back in the game?

During this one day international conference, speakers from universities
and high level officials from international institutions will deconstruct
the process which led to WSIS, the achievements and limits of its first
phase, the nature and extent of its outcome.

The conference will also discuss recommendations to policy makers at the
European level in order to meet the challenges raised by the unprecedented
pace of ICT innovation.
