[eccr] Right of EU citizens to full, impartial and objective information about the Union

Fri Apr 11 19:08:28 GMT 2003

Right of EU citizens to
full, impartial and objective information about the Union
---------------------------
European Parliament has given resounding approval to boosting the EU's
information and communication strategy. In his own-initiative report,
Juan José Bayona de Perogordo, underlined the right of EU citizens to
full, impartial and objective information about the Union. The language
used to reach out to the Union's citizens, should be "plain"
and accessible: available in official and co-official languages. MEPs
stressed the necessity of communicating "common European values" of
democracy and pluralism in Union publications and programmes. An
emphasis on boosting EU presence on television was of special concern to
MEPs. They want to see broadcast media
used much more heavily, especially in the run-up to the 2004
parliamentary elections. The parliament praised the Commission for its
efforts to consolidate the information flow and its intentions
of creating a joint strategy in this area. Overall, parliamentarians
advocated a greater decentralisation, with Member States, national
parliaments and regions doing their part in communicating 'Europe' to
their citizens.
