Call for abstracts: The Faculty of Communication at Bahçesehir University 
would like to invite scholars and media practitioners to take part in a 
conference/seminar on media and networks, scheduled to take place at 
Bahçesehir University (Bahçelievler Campus) in Istanbul on March 11 & 12, 
2003.  The theme of the conference has been selected in order to highlight 
the increasing importance of networking and connectivity (in both the 
traditional and electronic senses) to the production, distribution and 
consumption of media products. Individuals wishing to take part in the 
conference are asked to submit an abstract (maximum 250 words) on one of 
the following conference sub-themes:

MEDIA NETWORKS
1. National and International Networks for Media Financing, Creativity & 
Distribution
Possible topics to be addressed include (but are not limited to): 
international co-productions in film/TV/music/multimedia; media 
distribution and the Internet; the use of networking for media production 
within/across diasporic communities; networking amongst minority groups for 
the purposes of collaborative media production.
2. Networks and Journalism
Possible topics to be addressed include (but are not limited to): the 
continued power of international news agencies; breaking agency power 
through alternative news networks; constructing local/regional news 
networks; media conglomerates and the increased homogenization and/or 
diversity of news.
3. Networks and De-Centralizing Media Power
Possible topics to be addressed include (but are not limited to): the rise 
of the small-scale media producer; networks and the possibilities for 
outsourcing labor; digital networks and breaking the stranglehold of large 
distribution companies; the myth of fragmented audiences.

ACADEMIC NETWORKS
4. Academia, Networks and Research
Possible topics to be addressed include (but are not limited to): new 
possibilities for collaborative research in the wake of the digital 
revolution; improving academic contact between developed and developing 
nations; methodological questions concerning on-line research.

((cochristensen /at/ yahoo.com)). The deadline for submission of abstracts is 
February 19, 2003. Please make sure to include your name, position, 
institutional affiliation, and the sub-theme your final paper will address. 
Please place abstracts and all other information in the body of your email, 
and not as attached documents.
