[eccr] On the Internet, time is money

Thu May 16 10:01:00 GMT 2002

On the Internet, time is money
------------------------------
As more and more Internet content providers seek to generate additional
revenue streams by charging users to view their content, it seems that
devising new ways to relieve you of your money is where the real
creative energy is being applied today.

Not what you are prepared to pay for, but in terms of designing the nuts
and bolts of the technology that will allow you to pay anything at all.

Some are opting for the straightforward annual subscription model. The
UKs Financial Times, for instance, has recently announced that it is to
introduce two subscription access levels, one of Euro 120 per year, and
another of Euro 320.

But most Internet content providers are not so unrealistic as to think
that users will want to commit to their service for a whole year, or
indeed part with such sums of money in a single transaction.

Instead, what they want is a means to charge the user small amounts,
content-unit by content-unit. Furthermore, such an online pay-per-view
(PPV) scheme must offer the user convenience, security, and preferably,
anonymity.
