*Position Description*

We invite applications for an assistant professor in digital communication with expertise in digital media and power and the implications for various identity backgrounds such as race, gender, sexuality, disabilities, and intersectional identities. We especially welcome applicants whose digital communication scholarship illuminates issues and opportunities related to Latinx/a/o communities.

Experts in this area examine digital media’s potential to empower creative expression and civic life, as well as the economic and social implications of the digital divide and structural inequalities. Successful candidates may employ an array of methods including collection and analysis of large-scale behavioral data, ethnographic and participatory action research, and critical methods. The successful applicant will teach a range of courses, from core and capstone offerings to undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of specialty that prepare students to understand the aesthetic practices, social and political impacts, and cultural and community implications of digital media.

This position is one of several recruitments focused on Latinx/a/o experiences across campus, including in Educational Counseling, English and Comparative Literature, Journalism and Mass Communications, the School of Information, the School of Management, Sociology and Interdisciplinary Social Sciences, and Chicana and Chicano Studies.

Founded in 1963, SJSU’s Department of Communication Studies <mailto:https//www.sjsu.edu/comm/> is the fifth largest department on campus, with about 900 majors, 100 minors, and 40 graduate students. We offer six curricular programs and nine co-curricular programs (Graduate Teaching Associate, COMM Center, Internship program, Forensics Team, Social Media Team, Califia Performance Collective, COMM Study Abroad, COMM Student Association, and a thriving Honors Program). The department also coordinates closely with other units in the College of Social Sciences, particularly via the Ethnic Studies Collaborative (ESC), which supports Ethnic Studies curricular and co-curricular projects that address issues of settler colonialism, racial capitalism, immigration, and racialization, with a focus on the comparative histories and experiential knowledges of marginalized racial and ethnic groups in the U.S.

The Department of Communication Studies and San José State University value diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Our excellence in research, teaching, and service can only be fully realized by faculty, students, and staff who share our commitment to these values. SJSU enrolls more than 36,000 students, many of whom are historically underserved, and around 45% are first-generation and 38% are Pell-recipients. SJSU is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander (AANAPISI) Serving Institution. The university’s commitment to social justice extends from its vibrant, inclusive campus to an international network of over 275,000 alumni. As such, San José State is committed to increasing the diversity of its faculty so our disciplines, students, and the community can benefit from multiple ethnic and gender perspectives.

Successful candidates will demonstrate evidence of a commitment to equity and inclusion through their research, teaching, and/or service. We ask that all applicants include a Diversity Statement with their application package. A guide to writing this statement can be found at SJSU Diversity Statement Guidelines <https://www.sjsu.edu/provost/faculty-success/sjsu-diversity-statement-guidelines-for-faculty-applicants.php>, along with information about how these statements will be evaluated.
