[Commlist] Two funded PhD Scholarships in Virtual Production - London South Bank University

Wed Nov 03 11:27:47 GMT 2021

The School of Arts and Creative Industries at London South Bank University is pleased to advertise two fully funded PhD positions, commencing in January 2022 or ASAP. This is an exciting opportunity to undertake a doctoral research project with the Creative Technologies Research Centre (CTRC). Our applied research tackles real-world issues and encompasses a wide variety of methodologies and approaches, including practice-based research, empirical work on audiences and texts, and theory-driven analysis.

The new *Creative Technologies Research Centre* draws together the largest body of researchers in the School. We specialise in researching emerging technologies, from a practical and theoretical perspective taking the position that technology is a tool for cultural expression to enhance societal wellbeing. We have secured £6.2m funding from the European Regional Development Fund to fund the *Hi3 Network *which draws together small to medium-sized businesses and researchers in London and the South East of England to explore the creative, cultural, societal, and economic benefits of immersive and converged technologies. We’re working with Canterbury Christ Church University, Screen South, and Maidstone Studios to build three Hubs each with experimental studios, edit suites, and production spaces for co-working. The consortium is particularly interested in *Virtual Production. *

We have funding to support two energetic and critically-aware doctoral candidates interested in Virtual Production <https://www.target3d.co.uk/post/what-is-virtual-production-2021> in order to examine how film, pre and post production, and gaming are converging. The students will have full access to our studios at Maidstone Studios Limited <https://www.maidstonestudios.com/> and at Creative Folkestone <https://www.creativefolkestone.org.uk/).>. We can also offer a large variety of creative firms to work with. We are interested in, but not limited to critical analysis of:

  * The creative uses of the Unreal Gaming Engine in film, television,
    and marketing.
  * Aesthetics and storytelling in Virtual Production.
  * The diversity of the workforce currently engaged in Virtual Production.
  * Soundscapes and object-oriented sound for Virtual Production.
  * The nature of ‘The Volume’ (the immersive production space).
  * Intersectionality, translations, and boundary work across film,
television, and games cultures within the convergent space of
    Virtual Production.
