Professorship "Data Analytics and Audiovisual Media" (tenure track)
The Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF is a lively centre of art,
research and education. Renowned experts from the worlds of film
and academia provide students with intensive and individual
support at Germany's only film university. Conducting innovative
research with, in and on film and other audiovisual media, the
university is a cosmopolitan and non-discriminatory space for
cultural and social debate. Within the framework of the German Tenure
Track Programme, a research-led practice professorship in the field
of "Data Analytics and Audiovisual Media" is available at the
Film University from 01 October 2022 (salary grade W2, initially
limited to 5 years, with tenure track to W2).
Duration: The professorship is funded by the Federal-Länder
Programme for the Promotion of Young Academics (Tenure Track
Programme). It is initially limited to 5 years; following a positive
tenure evaluation, it will be transferred to a W2 lifetime
professorship. Further details can be found in the tenure-track statutes
of the Film University. Early-career and mid-career researchers
with an academic and creative track record are especially encouraged
to apply.
Job Description: The role will involve the research and development of
creative applications of data analysis or data science in the design,
production, distribution or analysis of audiovisual media. This
includes methods from the fields of visual data analytics,
cultural analytics, big data technologies, AI, machine learning or
network algorithms. Further, it will include the investigation of the
transformation of media under the influence of such methods and
their impact on artistic and media practices or social
discourses. As a link between scholarship and creative practice,
the professorship is intended to contribute to reflecting on the
transformation of audiovisual media, to help shape their artistic
development and to give the Film University an international profile in
this field. Applicants should have relevant, recognised work in
applied/practice-based/artistic research or research-based practice.
They should be able to further develop the field and initiate
groundbreaking collaborations. The main duties of the professorship
include: • Scientific and/or artistic research on the application of
methods of data analysis / data science in the field of audiovisual
media (see the fields of work listed below as examples in the
recruitment requirements). • Teaching (in English and German) in several
of the university's theoretical and practical Bachelor's or Master's
programmes, such as Creative Technologies, Digital Media Culture, Film
and Television Production or in other subjects. • Cross-curricular
courses to teach the basics of data literacy or digital literacy for the
field of audiovisual media • Collaboration in contexts of artistic or
practice-led research, for example within the framework of the Institute
for Artistic Research (IKF) • Participation in the supervision of
doctoral students (scholarly-artistic [“wissenschaftlich-
künstlerisches”] doctoral programme) • Independent third-party funding
activities • Expansion of the Film University's networking with
institutions of art, media practice or scholarship. Willingness to
participate in interdisciplinary research projects and projects as well
as in the self-
governing bodies of the Film University is required. Recruitment
requirements: • The legal requirements for employment are described in §
41 paragraph 1 number 1 to 4a (and paragraph 4 BbgHG) as follows: •
Completed university studies (MA and PhD) • Pedagogical aptitude,
proven by teaching experience (in German or English) • Special aptitude
for academic, artistic or research-led creative practice, proven by a
relevant, qualified theoretical, artistic, or practice-based doctorate •
Additional internationally recognised creative and/or academic
achievements, evidenced by published artefacts, texts, inventions or by
other proof of work. • Applicants (m/f/d) must have changed universities
after obtaining their doctorate or must have worked outside the
Filmuniversität Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF in an academic or research-led
practice capacity for at least two years. In addition, the following
recruitment requirements apply: - Mastery of relevant methods,
programming languages and software of data analysis / data science -
Experience in research-led practice on, or creative practice with,
data-scientific or -analytical procedures, proven by publication of
relevant papers or artefacts - Proven academic and/or media practice
experience and recognised achievements in at least one of the following
fields of work or related fields: o Application of data analysis / data
science in the development and design of audiovisual or other media
forms (e.g. non-linear, immersive, cross-media or networked forms) o
Application of data analytics / data science in the production of
audio-visual or other media (e.g. AI applications in conceptualisation,
pre-production, post-production; virtual production) o Application of
data analysis / data science in the distribution of audio-visual or
other media (e.g. distribution via platforms or networks, audience
building, recommendation algorithms, etc.) o Application of data
analysis / data science in the analysis of legal, economic and
technological developments of audiovisual or other media and their
social and ethical challenges (e.g. by means of analysis of large film
datasets, data visualisation, critical data analysis, cultural
analytics) - A good command of written and spoken English and the
willingness to also conduct courses in German after two years
Expected: - Knowledge of programming - Experience in the acquisition and
implementation of externally funded projects - Experience in
administrative and committee work - Experience in working in a team -
Experience in cooperation with media companies, non-academic research
institutions, art and cultural institutions - Network of international
cooperation and contacts Teaching duties: The teaching comprises 12
SWS (weekly contact hours per semester) according to the
teaching obligation regulations of the state of Brandenburg. The
predominant lingua franca of the university is German; courses may also
be offered in English.
