The Communications and Media Studies (CMS) program at Washington College
seeks candidates for an Assistant Professor appointment to begin August
2019. Candidates should hold a PhD in Communication, Media Studies, or
closely-related field. This is a full time, tenure track position. For
all applicants, evidence of teaching excellence at the college level and
a publication record are required.
Washington College, located in Chestertown, Maryland, is a selective
liberal arts institution with dedicated, intellectually curious, and
highly engaged students. CMS is one of the College’s newest and most
rapidly growing programs. Grounded in a critical/cultural studies
approach, CMS offers four robust concentration areas: Arts and
Production, Business and Organizational Communication, Identity and
Culture, and Film Studies. The successful candidate must have an
integrated understanding of critical/cultural studies and their work may
address media, technology, and the digital; critical branding studies;
transnational media studies; political economy of the media; media
theory and methods; or other topic broadly embedded in the social
science of communication. The successful candidate will be flexible,
able to meet a wide array of programmatic needs, have experience and a
demonstrated commitment to teaching, and a strong interest in teaching
and mentoring students in a residential, liberal arts college
environment. Experience in curriculum development is also desirable. The
CMS program is deeply invested in diversity of research, teaching, and
faculty.
This position involves a 3/3 load comprised of core and elective courses
in the program. This position will be charged with developing a roster
of courses for the department including but not limited to Interpersonal
Communication, Persuasion, International Communication, and
Intercultural Communication. Other teaching responsibilities will be
tailored to the successful candidate's specific areas of expertise. The
successful candidate will be expected to periodically contribute to the
college's first year seminar program.
