Two PhD positions are available at the Department of Media and Social
Sciences at the University of Stavanger, Norway. The positions are
related to the research project Digital News Agendas in Scandinavia,
funded by the Ander Foundation. Deadline for applications are 31 January.
The project will investigate the structural framework conditions of
online news spheres in Norway, Sweden and Denmark. One of the PhD
positions is related to digital business models, the other to digital
infrastructures.
The project is interdisciplinary and international in collaboration. For

The University of Stavanger invites applications for a doctorate
scholarship in media studies at the Department of Media and Social Sciences.
This is a trainee position that will give promising researchers
an opportunity for academic development leading to a doctoral
degree. Appointment is for three years with research duties only or four
years with research and 25% compulsory duties (teching and/or
administrative tasks). Whether the position is for three years (only
research) or four years with other duties will be clarified through the
recruitment process. The position is vacant from January 2018.
The position is linked to the project The Digital News Agenda
in Scandinavia. The PhD candidate will contribute to research on
digital news, digital journalism and media structures in Scandinavia
together with an international, cross-disciplinary research team.
The aim of the project is to analyse how the mediated online sphere is
connected, and who sets the digital news agendas in Scandinavia.
The project will uncover the structural, organisational and
technological factors behind news agendas online and on social media.
The project thereby maps the infrastructures necessary for journalism to
reach the public domain in the digital era. Additional questions concern
what constitutes the online news agenda, who the agenda setters are, and
how the agenda is constructed on network-based platforms. The project
uses data-assisted methods to analyse the digital editorial activities
of over 1000 news media, trade press, magazines, organisations
and political parties at the local, regional and national levels in
Norway, Sweden and Denmark.
Central topics include, but are not limited to, the following questions:
• How are local, regional, national and international news agendas in
Scandinavia linked together online?
• What does the Scandinavian news network look like? Which media are at
the centre, who are on the outskirts, and who are located in
the shadows? What does this location mean for participation in the
digital agenda setting process?
• What kind of news are published online, and what kind of news
are published on social media? What does the difference mean for
people’s news consumption and what does it mean for the public conversation?
• What are the factors shaping the digital news agendas in
Norway, Sweden and Denmark? How does technology, ownership and/or
geography shape the Scandinavian digital news network?
The proposed project could either answer one or more aspects raised by
these questions or be based on the issues these questions address. The
application should describe a project that concerns a
Scandinavian digital journalistic reality and news context, whether it
analyses news media, the trade press, political organisations or
social media, or a combination of these. The structural characteristics
of the media must be accounted for in some respect – whether it is
digital infrastructures (for instance the role of CMSs or algorithms in
news production), ownership structures, geographical location or medium
type (newspaper, radio, magazine, online media, television, social
media etc.) Comparative aspects are welcomed.
The PhD candidate will work closely with an international
research group. The research design must describe the research
questions, method, data and progress plan of the project. The successful
candidate will be trained in digital analysis methods. Programming
skills is an advantage, but not a requirement.
The position is funded by the Ander Foundation.
Applicants must have a strong academic background with a
five-year master degree within media and communication studies,
preferably recently, or possess corresponding qualifications which could
provide a basis for successfully completing a doctorate. Both the grade
for the master’s thesis and the weighted average grade of the
master’s degree must individually be equivalent to or better than a B grade.

• A cover letter including a brief account of research interests and
motivation for applying for the position
• A project proposal of up to 5 pages (or 3000 words) presenting
the research topic, research problems or questions, and choice of theory
and methods. The proposal should also include a progress plan for
the different parts of the project, as well as a literature list.

• A short summary of the master thesis, up to 2 pages (or 1000 words)
• Transcripts, diplomas and certificates relevant to the position
• A list of academic publications
In evaluating the applicants, emphasis will be placed on their potential
for research in the field.
The appointee must be able to work independently and as a member of a
team, be creative and innovative.
The research fellow must have a good command of both oral and
written English. Given the nature of the project to which the position
is affiliated, Scandinavian language proficiency is an advantage, but
not a requirement.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview.
The resulting PhD degree will qualify for research and teaching
positions at University level.
The appointee will be based at the University of Stavanger, with
the exception of a stay abroad at a relevant centre of research.
The successful candidate is expected to have the University of Stavanger
as their daily place of work.
The research fellow is salaried according to the State Salary Code, l.pl
17.515, code 1017, LR 20, ltr 50, of NOK 436.900,- per annum.
The position provides for automatic membership in the Norwegian Public
Service Pension Fund, which guarantees favourable retirement benefits.
