The University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a 
tenure-stream appointment in *Health Humanities*at the rank of Assistant 
Professor. The position will be held jointly in the Interdisciplinary 
Centre for Health and Society (ICHS) (49%) and in the Department of 
Anthropology (51%) and will commence on July 1, 2018.

We seek a Health/Medical Humanities scholar with research expertise and 
disciplinary training in critical approaches to disability studies, 
mental health, or race and/or racialization and health. Candidates must 
have a Ph.D. in a media studies discipline or a humanistic social 
science discipline, such as sociocultural anthropology, by the time of 
appointment or shortly thereafter. Candidates should be comfortable 
working in a highly interdisciplinary environment and should be able to 
convey to undergraduate students the importance of arts-, media- and/or 
humanities-based approaches to understanding human health. The 
successful candidate will contribute to the development of our exciting 
new undergraduate program in Health Humanities, the first of its kind in

contribute to one or more of the research strengths in the ICHS, such as 
Life Course and Health or Inequality and Health, is also desirable

The successful candidate will be expected to conduct innovative research 
at the highest international level and establish an outstanding, 
externally funded research program.  They must have an emerging record 
of scholarly accomplishments. They will provide evidence of excellence 
in research as demonstrated by publications in leading academic journals 
or a research pipeline that is at a high international level, 
presentations at significant conferences, wide recognition for original 
forms of knowledge production, a strong record of external funding, 
and/or awards for work in the field of Health Humanities or a relevant 
discipline, and strong endorsements by referees of high international 
standing.

Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching, 
where excellence can be demonstrated through teaching awards, strong 
course evaluations, innovative and engaging syllabi, strong endorsements 
from referees who can speak to the applicant’s teaching qualifications, 
and a teaching portfolio that includes a coherent statement of teaching 
philosophy that is linked to evidence of excellent pedagogical practice. 
Demonstrated excellence in other teaching-related activities, including 
performance as a teaching assistant or experience leading successful 
workshops or seminars, will also be of interest to the selection 
committee. The successful candidate will be expected to teach 
undergraduate courses at various levels, from introductory courses 
through upper-level courses in their area of expertise. //

The ICHS is a growing academic unit whose faculty represent a wide range 
of disciplinary backgrounds and expertise. ICHS faculty have 
affiliations and research collaborations with a wide range of 
institutional centres at the University of Toronto, including the 
Faculty of Medicine, the Rehabilitation Sciences Institute, the Dalla 
Lana School of Public Health, and the Jackman Humanities Institute. The 
Department of Anthropology at UTSC is widely recognized for its 
excellence in research and teaching, and is home to the University of 
Toronto Centre for Ethnography

will have a graduate appointment in one of the tri-campus graduate units 
most relevant to their area of scholarship.
