[ecrea] PhD studentship on "Imagining Peace"

Fri Apr 14 11:31:39 GMT 2017

My new institution, Leeds Trinity University, is funding a PhD studentship for me on the topic of ‘Imagining Peace’.

__

‘Imagine peace’ is the only content in a one-page ad placed each year in the New York Times by the Yoko Ono foundation. The starkness and emptiness of the ad indicates crucial questions for the study of the mostly frustrated search for peace. How can the political imagination of peace be understood not only as idealisation of the future but also as the concrete practice of peace activists in the present? How have social media impacted the ways in which peace activism is communicated within movements and between them and their publics? Does peace activism matter even when it does not achieve its ostensible goals? How can the relatively undeveloped concept of peace in political theory be imagined more fully in conjunction with the notions of peace that prevail in Peace Studies? Under the principal supervision of *Dr Jon Simons (*(j.simons /at/ leedstrinity.ac.uk) <mailto:(j.simons /at/ leedstrinity.ac.uk)>*) *, this PhD will explore the imagination of peace in one or more of four fields: (1) the materialization of images of peace in cultural political activism; (2) the mediation of images of peace in online activism; (3) the non-instrumental significance of peace activism; (4) the political theory of peace.

Please pass on to any current or past students who might be interested.

Application details are at: http://www.jobs.ac.uk/job/AYQ711/7-full-time-funded-phd-studentships/ (There are also topics for studentships with other researchers at Leeds Trinity).
