Applications are invited for a full-time permanent Senior Lectureship in Journalism, located in the discipline of English within the School of Humanities. The appointee will teach, research and lead the development of English-language journalism programmes. She or he will also be expected to contribute to one or more of the following strategic development areas in English: publishing studies, digital cultures, non-fiction writing. Applicants should be able to demonstrate journalistic experience and familiarity with the journalism profession, and the capacity to apply these in an academic setting.

Journalism at NUI Galway

Journalism studies is located within the discipline of English in the School of Humanities. We currently run an MA in Journalism and BA Connect with Journalism, as well as offering option modules in journalism and media studies within the English undergraduate curriculum. The University now seeks to develop its journalism programmes to meet the new demands and trends in the journalistic and media professions. The post-holder will be expected to take a leadership role in this development.

The post-holder will be a member of the discipline of English. English is the largest discipline in the School of Humanities, with around 1200 undergraduates, 60 MA students and 30 PhD students. We teach a broad undergraduate curriculum, touching on all major historical periods and genres, and we run six taught MA programmes: MA in English; MA in Literature and Publishing, MA in Culture and Colonialism; MA in Writing; MA in Journalism, MA in Digital Cultures. Our staff also contribute to the Blended Learning BA programme and to programmes in Theatre Studies and Creative Writing. There is a highly active research culture in English, and staff have had major funding successes under the European Research Council, the Marie Sklodowska-Curie programme, the Irish Research Council, and the Programme for Research In Third Level Institutions (PRTLI). Staff in English are closely associated with NUI Galway’s Moore Institute for Research in Humanities and Social Studies. In the 2017 QS University Rankings, English at NUI Galway was ranked within the top 150 English departments in the world.

Salary: €66,035 to €91,242 p.a.

(This appointment will be made on the Senior Lecturer scale in line with current Government pay policy)

(For pre 1995 public sector entrants in Ireland, the D class Salary rates will apply)
