[ecrea] PhD scholarships at Dublin City University

*The School of Communications at Dublin City University is now inviting 
applications from qualified candidates for up to five PhD Scholarships.*

The School of Communications at DCU is one of the top Communications 
departments in Europe. It is a vibrant, outward-looking department that 
combines intensive research activity with the strongest commitment to 
high quality undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Our staff are 
committed to producing cutting-edge research across a range of 
(inter)disciplinary fields including (new) media studies, media history, 
journalism studies, science communication, political communication, 
social media studies, film and television studies, music industry 
studies, advertising, and cultural studies. In the past five years, we 
have supported approximately 40 doctoral students to achieve PhD awards 
through this scheme.


The School now has an opening for up to five funded PhD scholarships. As 
well as a tax-free stipend of not less than €14,000 plus fees, we also 
support our students with funding for conference travel and research and 
offer PhD students opportunities to teach courses.

While scholarships are open to those working in a wide array of 
theoretical, epistemological and methodological approaches relevant to 
our school, this year, we particularly welcome applications in the 
following areas:


*Journalism / Media History*: Fellowship(s) in this area should ideally 
involve the design, development and implementation of an oral history 
project centred on the working lives of former journalists and editors.

*Activism & Protest in the Digital Age*: Fellowship(s) in this area 
should ideally focus on the relationship between citizens, digital 
media, and the communicative affordances shaping activism and mass 
protest today, particularly in developing or failed states, as framed by 
growing populist politics, authoritarian threats to independent media, 
internet freedom and human rights, and the development of alternative 
media spaces for debate, expression, and dissent. (For further

*Digital Methodologies in Communications*: Fellowship(s) in this area 
should ideally be concerned with analysis of education technologies, 
online communications, and political discourse. Research incorporating 
structured data in mixed methods approaches (e.g. social media “big 
data”) is particularly relevant. (For further information contact Dr.

Potential candidates should provide a 2,000 word application outlining 
your research proposal as well as a CV detailing academic qualifications 
and professional experience to date.

Candidates must have consulted with a potential supervisor before applying.
