Job Purpose:

The Communication Studies Department at Gonzaga University invites
applications for the position of Assistant or Associate Professor in
rhetoric and science communication beginning August 2017. We seek a
teacher-scholar, grounded in a humanities tradition of communication
scholarship, with dual emphases in science/technology and
communication pedagogy. The tenure home for this position will be in
Communication Studies and the College of Arts and Sciences with
specific teaching responsibilities in the School of Engineering and
Applied Science (SEAS). This position will develop and implement an
educational program in oral, visual, and team/group communication that
fulfills Gonzaga’s core curriculum requirements within the engineering
and computer science undergraduate programs.

The Communications Studies department at Gonzaga University is a
dynamic, growing department of ten full-time faculty members. Our
teaching and research advances a humanistic approach to communication
through our collective strengths in rhetoric (theory and criticism),
media, and cultural studies. We desire a collaborative colleague who
will complement and add to the department’s existing strengths.
Scholarly interest in and innovative work with communication pedagogy
and education are essential. We seek candidates with scholarly
interests in areas such as: rhetoric of science and technology;
scientific discourse and its intersections with discourses of race and
gender; analysis of public discourse and public communication about
science and technology; analysis of deliberation and debate about
science and technology; storytelling and science; and the like. We
desire candidates who will contribute to College of Arts and Sciences
initiatives such as interdisciplinary collaboration (e.g. science,
engineering, and health), undergraduate research and inquiry, and
public humanities and community-engaged scholarship.

The successful candidate will collaborate with faculty in the
engineering and computer-science disciplines and with the leadership
of the SEAS (Dean, Director of the Center for Engineering Design and
Entrepreneurship, and the Department Chairs) to help the student
population refine their oral communication skills and adapt technical
information to multiple audiences. With these partners, the position
will employ creative communication pedagogies in order to embed
communication education and practice across the engineering curricula
(from First Year Seminar to Senior Design). This position will also
introduce theory and educational practice in public communication /
science outreach. The successful candidate will be prepared to develop
appropriate assessment methods and rubrics to evaluate student
capacity for effective, adaptable communication to multiple
stakeholders and audiences, particularly in reference to the published
student outcomes for the university core curriculum. This position
will also develop assessment plans and provide evidence of student
growth and learning. Preference will be given to candidates with
experience in scientific and technical communication education and
experience working with learners in engineering fields.

The successful candidate will have experience in teaching, research,
and service that aligns with and supports Gonzaga’s mission of
educating students for lives of leadership and service for the common

excellence in teaching.

All faculty in the Communication Studies department share
responsibilities for teaching the first-year, Core curriculum course,
COMM 100: Communication and Speech. The normal teaching load is 18
credits per academic year. This position would begin with 9 credits
per academic year in Communication Studies (including the Core
Curriculum course) and 9 credit hours per academic year allocated for
integration and execution of core communication curriculum in the
School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). After establishing
a communication education program in SEAS the position would migrate
to 12 credit hours in Communication Studies and 6 credit hours for
teaching and assessment activities in SEAS.

Required Qualifications:

*A Ph.D. in Rhetoric or Communication Studies – ABD considered, with
the expectation the candidate will be degree in hand by August 1,
2017

*Evidence of effectiveness in teaching oral, team/group, and public
communication

*An active research program

*At least one year experience teaching learners in science and engineering



Preferred Qualifications:

*Undergraduate degree or educational background in science,
engineering, computer science, or related fields

*Experience with systematic learning outcomes assessment in
communication education

*Experience in instructional design and technology

*Experience with innovative and non-traditional communication
education across the curriculum

*A research program in public science outreach or scientific/technical
communication education
