Global Arts Cluster Recruitment
University of California, Riverside

The University of California at Riverside (UCR) is implementing a major expansion of our faculty and investing in state-of-the-art research facilities to support their work. This expansion will build critical mass in 34 vital and emerging fields of scholarship, foster truly cross-disciplinary work, and further diversify the faculty at one of America's most diverse research universities. We encourage applications from scholars committed to excellence and seeking to help define the research university for the next generation, and with the potential for or demonstrated ability to attract, work with, and teach a highly diverse student body. For more information about our hiring initiative or to submit an application, please visit clusterhiring.ucr.edu or academicpersonnel.ucr.edu

Four faculty members whose work represents transformative directions in theories and praxes of global arts will join a vibrant academic and artistic community via open rank recruitment of four positions, including both junior and senior hires. The Global Arts hiring initiative seeks thought leaders whose work engages practices that transcend national boundaries to address knowledge systems and practices within a global contextual frame. Preference will be given to candidates with significant international experience and expertise whose work takes into account historical processes of globalization and/or contemporary issues of global import. Successful candidates will join a department corresponding to their areas of expertise, and will be expected to teach in the Global Studies program and contribute to other inter- or trans-disciplinary programs.

We seek to make four appointments in Global Arts, with preference given to the following areas: . Cultural workers who join a materialist approach to critiques of globalization, with active creative practices and/or activist experience; media theorist/practitioners well-versed in cutting edge critical discourse and practices in global, transnational, or hemispheric frames especially encouraged. . Theater or Film directors whose work is widely transnational in scope, addressing issues of globalization and/or diversity and/or the juxtaposition of cultural perspectives, narratives and aesthetics, and whose creative research is deeply engaged with new technologies, movement-based disciplines, and/or multimedia, ideally able to work in more than one language, and to collaborate with artists from a range of intercultural locations. . Scholars of contemporary art history and visual cultures who focus on aesthetic, creative, and cultural practices in global contexts, whose research specialization (period, area; transnational, diasporic, etc.) critically engages with the ways in which art contributes to and is shaped by cultural difference as well as intercultural exchange, with documented interests in thinking beyond established Western narratives of art and art history. . Dance scholars, artists, or artist-scholars with research focused globally and extending beyond widely established Euro-American approaches to dance; working with dance making practices from various cultural and aesthetic backgrounds and/or across geographic/political/linguistic boundaries; with interests in integrating new media, sound, and/or new technologies within performances in ways that cross and address these boundaries.

Required qualifications are a terminal degree in the area of specialization or related field (e.g. Ph.D., DMA, MFA) or a prior university appointment or equivalent experience along with evidence of international recognition for creative achievements appropriate to an academic environment.
