The Department of Film Studies at the University of St Andrews invites applications for September 2017 entry to our PhD programme. As the newest department at Scotland’s oldest university, Film Studies offers a vibrant and comprehensive research culture. Successful applicants will join a diverse community of approximately 20 PhD students from 10 countries working on a wide range of exciting topics <http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/filmstudies/about/our-students/>. Our students are also involved in many initiatives such as the organization of an annual PG conference and the editing of /Frames Cinema Journal/. <http://framescinemajournal.com/> You will also have access to one of the largest research collections of DVDs in the UK, with special strengths in international documentary, Latin American, and South Asian Cinema.

Staff and PGRs alike are dedicated to the study of Film Cultures, with areas of expertise in, among others:

  * Political documentary
  * Film Festivals and Global Film Circulation
  * Digital Media
  * Stars
  * East European and German Cinema
  * South Asian Cinema
  * Early Cinema
  * Cinema and History
  * Gender and Cinema
  * Cinema and Affect

StAndrews is part of a block grant of AHRC studentships run in partnership with the Scottish Graduate School for the Arts and Humanities (SGSAH). A select number of studentships will be available for PhD applicants living the UK and the European Union. Successful UK applicants will benefit from fees, stipend and significant additional flexible funding to shape their doctoral training. For successful EU applicants, the AHRC covers fee expenses only. Only students accepted to a PhD programme are eligible for AHRC funding. To be considered for an AHRC award, you must submit a complete application to our programme no later than *15 December 2016. *If accepted, you will then need to gain School approval to submit a separate application through the SGSAH.

The department will also offer a limited number of internal scholarships for PhD study starting in fall 2017. These scholarships are open to all successful applicants. To be considered for scholarship funding, you must apply no later than *15 March 2016.*
