[Commlist] CFP: The Films of Scott Graham - Symposium

Fri Jun 12 10:20:39 GMT 2026

Just a wee reminder of our symposium around the films of Scott Graham, taking place at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh. We’ve also changed the date, by one day, to *Tue 18 August*.

As the writer and director of three feature-length films - /Shell (/2012), /Iona/ (2015), /Run /(2019) - Scott occupies a rare space in contemporary Scottish filmmaking, as somebody with an impressive and significant body of work, overdue sustained academic and critical attention and who, according to Petrie (2025), 'provides evidence for the continuing relevance of a distinctive Scottish cinematic tradition'. Furthermore, Germanà (2022) has already begun to explore the gothic aspect in Scott's work, via /Shell/, arguing that its depiction of the Scottish Highlands offers a haunting reminder of the landscape's past.

For the symposium we are inviting people we think might be interested in contributing a paper on any aspect of Scott's work, including, but not limited to:

  *
Genre, Melodrama and representations of families
  *
    Representations of women
  *
    Representations of men
  *
Use of space and place, e.g., rural Scotland
  *
    Sound and silence
  *
    Identity and nationhood
  *
    'Scottish miserablism'
  *
Making a career in the Scottish film industry: policy, funding,
    talent development etc.

Of course, we are open to other avenues that contributors might take, and we would be delighted to hear from you.

Papers will take the form of 20 minute presentations (other forms such as video essays are also welcome) and there will be tea and coffee provided on the day.

If you are interested, please send a short paper abstract (c.250 words) with an accompanying bio (c.100 words) to (RMunro /at/ qmu.ac.uk) by *Friday 19 June 2026*.
