Thu Oct 16 16:51:13 GMT 2025

East European Politics and Societies - EEPS <https://journals.sagepub.com/home/eep> Special Section Call for Papers <https://journals.sagepub.com/page/eep/media-democratic-backsliding>: Media and democratic backsliding

Guest editors:
Raluca-Nicoleta RADU, Professor of Journalism, University of Bucharest, Romania ((raluca.radu /at/ fjsc.ro) <mailto:(raluca.radu /at/ fjsc.ro)>) Gabor POLYAK, Professor of Media law and media policy, Eötvös Loránd University, Hungary ((polyak.gabor /at/ btk.elte.hu) <mailto:(polyak.gabor /at/ btk.elte.hu)>)

This thematic cluster, devoted to media and democratic backsliding in Eastern Europe, addresses two major gaps in the available literature. First, it seeks to understand better how journalists collaborate with their sources in order to warn their audiences  about autocratic tendencies, so that the society at large is able to block democratic backsliding. Second, it tries to uncover the reasons why such efforts are not always successful. Through targeted case studies and comparative studies alike, this thematic cluster makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the conditions under which media systems respond to democratic backsliding.

We invite prospective authors to develop theoretically and methodologically sound analyses on themes such as: -Patterns of media instrumentalization and of media resistance to backsliding -Strategies used by journalists for quality, public interest information in declining democracies
-Media usage by citizens, during democratic backsliding
-Examinations of disinformation campaigns that support – or are nurtured – by democratic backsliding -The coverage and effects of conspiracy theories employed by political leaders -The coverage of leaks, whistle-blowers, online mobilization and offline demonstrations and other instruments to hold the powerful accountable.

We envision a thematic cluster that will include up to ten research articles, as well as an introduction written by the guest editors. We will make every effort to include early career and senior scholars, to provide a gender balanced slate of authors, and to include a diversity of countries from the region.
