[Commlist] The role of local and community media in forging identities. Call for papers.

Thu Dec 19 16:57:58 GMT 2024

The Local and Community Media Network is inviting proposals for a specially constituted panel on the theme of identity for the MeCCSA 2025 conference. The 2025 conference, to be held at Edinburgh Napier University, focuses on the theme of identity and belonging. The significance of identity is heightened as individuals navigate their sense of self in new and evolving cultural and social environments. This raises questions about how identities can be preserved or adapted, and the responsibilities of academics and researchers in addressing identities at risk. This broad theme is a rich seam for scholars of the local and we invite consideration of the role of local and community media in creating identities and also shared notions of sustaining communities and places.

Specific themes may include:
• How local and community media interact with people in a place to construct identities
•	Emerging models of local and community media
•	The impact of the loss of provision on people and places
•	The role of local and community media heritage in identity formation
•	The local in relation to populism and disinformation
•	Sustainable local and community media
•	The role of community in the future of local and community media

The organising committee also welcomes submissions in other areas which align with the theme. Submissions may explore both theoretical and empirical work and may include practice-based outputs. Please submit a short abstract (of 150-200 words) each including details of the contributor/s), and the name and contact details of the panel proposer with up to 5 key words. We particularly encourage PHD and early career researchers to contribute.
Please send abstracts to (r.matthews /at/ coventry.ac.uk) by January 31.
