[Commlist] Call for Papers: Beyond Borders: Creative Methods and Reflexive Approaches to Migration, Media, and Intercultural Dialogue

Wed Dec 11 18:20:46 GMT 2024

*Call for Papers: ECREA Diaspora Migration and the Media & International and Intercultural Communication Sections Conference* *"Beyond Borders: Creative Methods and Reflexive Approaches to Migration, Media, and Intercultural Dialogue"*
*16-18 September 2025*
*Tallinn University*

Organized by the *Diaspora, Migration, and the Media Section* in collaboration with the *International and Intercultural Communication Sections Conference*, this event focuses on methodological and reflexive perspectives in migration and media studies.

Recent global challenges and the rise of far-right governments worldwide have intensified the persecution of migrants, transforming borders into harsh zones of exclusion and surveillance. Migration is increasingly criminalized, and those seeking safety and opportunity are often met with hostility, reinforcing narrow nationalist ideologies. This environment poses new methodological challenges for migration research and prompts reflexive considerations on knowledge generation, participant care, and the creation of spaces that support human dignity and mobility.

This conference invites researchers to propose abstracts addressing methodological and reflexive perspectives in exploring multifaceted migration experiences and intercultural communication within this context of border closing and migration persecution.

*Topics of Interest:*
We encourage submissions exploring alternative, reflexive, creative methodological approaches and critical epistemologies on topics such as:

  * Intercultural encounters and dialogue
  * Practices of exclusion, surveillance, and persecution at borders
  * AI, platform affordances, and infrastructures in migration contexts
  * Digital counter-publics and diasporic activism
  * Multilingualism in digital spaces and implications for social cohesion
  * Ethical dimensions in researching migration and intercultural dialogue
  * Identity formation and belonging

*PhD Workshop:*
In addition to the conference, a PhD workshop on 16 September 2025 will focus on creative research methods, alternative writing styles, and reflexive approaches. Participants can attend either or both events. Details on the workshop structure will be provided later.
