*Conference (In)Visible Networks: Reconfiguration of the Russian Civil
Society and Journalism in Uncertain Times*
Dates and location: *7-11 November 2024, Turkey*
The Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, among
other things, has dramatically altered the way scholars research Russia.
The country has become a hardly accessible ‘black box’ for in-person and
remote access research. Increasing censorship, political pressure and
disrupted international cooperation created new burdens for knowledge
production and data transparency for scholars.
However, despite the legal, moral, physical and political constraints,
researchers strive to create a nuanced picture of Russia’s ongoing
transformations. This work is paramount for the area studies
scholarship, as well as for policymaking, experts in the field and media
reporting across the globe.
Considering these new conditions of political uncertainty caused by
Russia’s full-scale war in Ukraine, the upcoming conference aims to:
*
Bring together scholars, civil society representatives, journalists,
and policymakers with expertise on Russia and the region;
*
Fill in the gaps of the methodological and theoretical approaches;
*
Critically rethink the potential of Russian civil society in
responding to political and societal challenges caused by the war;
*
Re-assess and re-evaluate the scholarly and applied work on Russian
civil society and offer suggestions for its future trajectories.
Possible topics of presentations:
Journalism, civil society and activism in exile;
*
Outward and inward migration;
*
Social movements and activist initiatives in Russia since 2022, with
a particular interest in feminist, environmental, urban and anti-war
activism(s);
*
Modes of resistance and everyday activism(s) in Russia;
*
Postcolonial, national and ethnic movements in Russia;
*
Patriotism, ideology, propaganda and information warfare;
*

*

since 2022;

and journalism inside and outside of Russia.
Submission deadline: *1 August 2024*
