[Commlist] Cfp. Media and Emotional Mobilisation

Wed Aug 16 21:52:03 GMT 2023

The deadline for submissions to the conference: “Media and Emotional Mobilization”, Kalmar, Sweden 12-13 October, has been extended to 31 August 2023.

A bug in the submission system caused problems for some submitters. This is now fixed, and we have therefore extend the deadline and welcome your Abstracts until 31 august.

In recent years, there has been growing interest in the ways that emotions are mobilised through various forms of media, including social media, news media, and entertainment media. Emotional and experiential understanding have been central both in news and artistic media. However, in the digital networked society, the ways how media exploit and communicate emotions have reached new complexities in the way how different media have become a powerful tool to influence emotions, and in turn, how emotions can drive individuals and groups to take action. Emotional mobilisation in/through media is here understood as a strategic practice of appealing to affect and emotion, using resources and affordances of today’s digital media landscape, to achieve specific goals, such as motivating target groups to action, or creating engagement around certain political issues.

Against the background of recent developments in political and cultural life, where affect and emotions are increasingly identified as important drivers of democratic (or anti-democratic) engagement, this conference seeks to explore the various ways in which media can mobilise emotions and how emotions can be harnessed for social and political action.

We welcome proposals that address the following themes, but are not limited to:

-Theoretical perspectives on the role of emotions in media and social mobilisation.

-Case studies of emotional mobilisation through various forms of media. For instance: the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, climate change and other topics.

-Conspiracy theories and conspiratorial meaning-making as expressions of emotional mobilization.

-The weaponization of emotional mobilization in malign information influence operations and disinformation

-The ethical implications of emotional mobilisation in media, including questions of manipulation, exploitation, and privacy.

-Intermedial and multimodal perspectives on emotional mobilisation.

-The role of emotions in political campaigns and movements, and how the media can influence them.

-How journalism handles the tension between narration and verification.

-The relationship between emotional mobilisation and activism, and between emotional mobilisation and art.

-The impact of emotional mobilisation on public opinion, policy, and social change.

-The formation of counter-publics through alternative media.
