Genders, Sexualities and Pop Culture

How has Pop Culture, in its close relationship with the market, produced 
for entertainment, often perceived as alienating, triggered issues of 
gender and sexuality? One way to answer this question is by looking at 
star system celebrities like Whitney, Cher, Madonna, Britney, Lady Gaga, 
Beyoncé, pop divas adored by gay men, role models for cis and trans 
women, celebrated by the entertainment industry and appropriated by a 
legion of fans. Studies on Pop Culture are powerful places for debates 
on gender and sexuality as they bring up media pedagogies that are 
configured as symbolic material for the social fabric. Idols, fans, 
celebrities, media production systems and spheres of consumption and 
circulation emerge as observable and analyzable environments in 
investigations. This call for papers intends to receive contributions 
that address, among other issues, the triad of gender, sexuality and pop 
culture from “bastard” and intersectional readings, triggering 
theoretical contributions that dialogue with Queer Theory, Feminist and 
Decolonial Studies. Coordination: Larissa Pelúcio, Adriana Amaral,

Papers resulting from empirical research, reviews, essays, experience 
reports and artistic works may be submitted, following the norms 
provided for each session. Documents can be submitted in English, 
Spanish or Portuguese. Contributions must be original, consistent with 
the editorial scope of the journal, unpublished and must not be under 
review for publication by another journal. All papers are submitted to 
peer review. Documents must be submitted on the journal’s website 
(https://periodicoscientificos.ufmt.br/ojs/index.php/rebeh), in 
accordance with editorial standards, by April 30, 2023.


About the journal

Revista Brasileira de Estudos da Homocultura is edited by the Brazilian 
Association of Trans-Homoculture Studies (ABETH) and aims to publish 
papers, interviews, documents, reviews, artistic works, essays, 
experience reports and thematic dossiers that address the studies on 
gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity and diversities that intersect the 
social markers of difference and positions contrary to the norm. The 
Editorial Board is composed of representatives of the most prestigious 
Brazilian universities, in addition to researchers linked to the 
University of Pittsburgh, CUNY and Joint Research Center - European 
Commission.
