Research in Ibero-America"*

RAEIC, Revista Española de la Asociación Española de Investigación de la 
Comunicación, invites proposals for articles for its upcoming issue on 
"The Future of the Field: Past, Present, and Future of Communication 
Research in Ibero-America," which will be published in October 2023.

The deadline for submission of final texts is June 15, 2023.

Oliveira (Universidade Federal Fluminense).

Description: Studies on communication research in Ibero-America have 
traditionally been an inexhaustible source of evidence documenting the 
origin and evolution of the field, dominant scientific patterns, and the 
impact of Ibero-American research in Spain and the world (Vessuri et 
al., 2014; Martínez-Nicolás & Saperas-Lapiedra, 2016). In recent 
decades, this line of research has been consolidating, largely thanks to 
the structured efforts, but also the voluntary efforts, of many 
researchers from different traditions and sensitivities 
(Piñeiro-Naval-Morais, 2019; Caffarel et al., 2018). Regardless of the 
origin of these contributions, it is fair to say without fear of being 
wrong that communication research in Ibero-America enjoys great prestige 
within our borders, but efforts to integrate it into the competitive 
international market are still rudimentary, despite recent progress and 
the formation of circuits of excellence in scientific publication. In 
this context, it is interesting to revisit the ferment of our field, 
critically analyze what has brought us here, and consider the 
expectations and practices with which to anticipate the future. However, 
this task is not easy. As has been highlighted, there have been many 
previous studies that have contributed to our understanding of the 
methodological and theoretical nature of the field, although in recent 
years there has been some repetition and exhaustion (Walter et al., 
2018). The aim of this special issue is to revitalize this intellectual 
terrain through the proposal of theoretical and empirical studies that, 
from a critical, provocative, and challenging perspective, examine the 
practices and patterns of communication research in Ibero-America 
(Goyanes, 2017). Through problematizing these practices and mechanisms 
that are taken for granted, this special issue will seek to propose 
alternative or challenging scenarios that help fertilize a more 
interesting and diverse intellectual terrain (Herbst, 2008). As a whole, 
this line of research is relevant because it stimulates a critical 
attitude towards the nature of the field, as well as the norms, values, 
and practices that govern communication research. Based on these 
objectives, we encourage further exploration of the following aspects:

Thematic areas:

Inequalities, biases, and lack of representativeness in communication 
research
Critical studies on dominant scientific paradigms and their impact on 
communication research
Theoretical and/or empirical reflections on new ways of articulating and 
disseminating communication research in national and international journals
Critical studies on the relationship between power and knowledge in the 
process of production and dissemination of scientific communication 
(endogamy/invisible schools) and systems of co-optation
The role and impact of accreditation agencies in the development of 
communication research, their professional profiles, and identity
The role of multilingualism in Ibero-America in communication research
Critical studies (scientometric and bibliometric) of research and 
production patterns in Ibero-America and Ibero-American research in 
international journals
Critically reflected and theoretically grounded reflections on the 
evolution of studies and research in the field of communication and its 
subfields.
Other thematic areas that offer a provocative and challenging 
perspective on the state, agendas, and evolution of communication research.

The RAE-IC does not charge any fees for submitting or processing 
articles. Additionally, publication in the journal is also completely 
free of charge.
