DRAOI 2023 Summer Seminar Series

Relevant Dates
Proposal deadline: 15 May 2023
Seminars: weekly, July and August 2023

For the third year in a row, the Discourse Research Association of Ireland (DRAOI) will be hosting a Summer Seminar Series in July and August 2023. We are delighted to announce that we are now accepting proposals for presentations for this year’s series.

In keeping with the broad scope of DRAOI and the various paths to discourse and discourse analysis that our membership reflect, we welcome submissions focusing on discourse research in all of its forms, including but not limited to:

(Critical) discourse analysis/ studies
Discourse theory
Sociolinguistics
Pragmatics
Multimodal and/or digital discourses
Discourse, language, and ideology
Discourse with a specific subject focus: e.g. economics, gender and sexuality, policy, government and politics, media, education, industry, sustainability and climate change, ethics, sociology, communication, etc.

DRAOI’s annual Summer Seminar Series provides a welcoming, informal atmosphere for discourse researchers to share their work, meet and network with other discourse-oriented scholars, and engage in productive discussions on a wide variety of topics. When requested for works in progress, presenters can expect helpful and friendly feedback in a positive environment. The format of presentations will vary depending on the submissions received, but may include:

An overview of a planned / in progress research project, or a summary of findings
A book talk (at any stage of production)
A summary of a recent publication
A conference presentation (including those presented in other venues)
A workshop / tutorial on a specific disciplinary or methodological approach to discourse research
An overview of a Masters or PhD thesis
Creative proposals also welcome

As in previous years, we aim to host talks from discourse researchers who are based in Ireland (north and south), who have personal or professional ties to Ireland, and/or who focus on discourses in the Irish context. Aside from this selection preference, we are proud to showcase the work of scholars from diverse backgrounds at any career stage or status (including postgraduate researchers and unemployed/unaffiliated researchers, as well as senior academics).

To propose a talk for the Summer Seminar Series, please submit an abstract of 200-300 words by 15 May 2023 via the submission form on our website, found here: https://discourseresearch.ie/summer-seminar-series/2023-summer-seminar-series/ <https://discourseresearch.ie/summer-seminar-series/2023-summer-seminar-series/>.

All seminars will be held online and are free of charge for both speakers and attendees. Details of the schedule of presentations for the 2023 series, as well as joining links to the virtual talks, will be circulated in due course on our mailing list.
