[Commlist] Call for Chapters: ReFocus: The Films of Anthony Mann

Tue Apr 11 18:01:16 GMT 2023

*ReFocus: The Films of Anthony Mann*

Anthony Mann’s work over three decades in Hollywood, particularly in the genres of film noir and the western, has been rightly seen as seminal by cinephiles and film critics, but has not yet received the scholarly attention one might expect. From his early career in theatre, through a brief stint in television, to becoming one of Hollywood’s most iconographic filmmakers, Mann’s work demonstrated a psychological intensity and an aesthetic rigour rarely matched.

Despite a number of book-length studies (Basinger 2007; Darby 2009; Alvarez 2014), and a focus upon Mann’s westerns (Kitses 1969), a significant amount of Mann’s filmmaking career remains critically neglected, and that which has been written about remains open to new interpretations and scholarly analysis. With this in mind, we are proposing the first edited collection on Mann’s work, in order to offer a comprehensive overview of his filmmaking, as well as work in theatre and television, and to contextualise the range and depth of Mann’s work for contemporary readers. We welcome chapters from a range of analytical, historical, methodological and theoretical perspectives. Prospective topics may include, but are not limited to:

  * Analyses of individual films
  * Historical look at Mann’s work in theatre and/or television
  * Mann’s Westerns
  * Mann’s film noirs
  * Mann’s Epic films
  * Mann’s work/relationship with actors (i.e.Jimmy Stewart)
  * Recurring themes in Mann’s work (i.e. limits of patriarchy,
    obsession, suffering, psychological torment, paranoia and
    conspiracy, etc)
  * Mann’s style (i.e. use of colour, widescreen, composition, lighting,
    staging, landscape etc)
  * Exclusive interviews with relevant collaborators or directors
    influenced by Mann’s filmmaking

We are currently soliciting abstracts of approximately 350 words for essays to be included in a book-length anthology on Anthony Mann’s cinema, including his work in television and theatre, to appear in 2025. The Films of Anthony Mann will be a scholarly volume published in the University of Edinburgh’s ReFocus series, examining American film directors. Series editors are Robert Singer, Gary D. Rhodes, and Frances Smith. ReFocus features a series of contemporary methodological and theoretical approaches to the interdisciplinary analyses and interpretations of the work of these American directors, from the once-famous to the ignored, in direct relationship to American culture --its myths, values, and historical precepts.

Essays accepted and included in the refereed anthology should be approximately 6,000 to 8,000 words and referenced in Chicago endnote style. The series can be viewed here: https://edinburghuniversitypress.com/series-refocus-the-international-directors-series <https://edinburghuniversitypress.com/series-refocus-the-international-directors-series>

Please send a 350-word abstract and a short author bio to Robert Munro ((RMunro /at/ qmu.ac.uk) <mailto:(RMunro /at/ qmu.ac.uk)>), by 1 August 2023.
