Thu Apr 06 12:57:08 GMT 2023

1st Future of Magazine Conference: Connecting in a disconnected age

19 - 21 July | Lusófona University | Lisbon (CFP deadline extended to 24th April)

MagLab is pleased to announce the extension of the abstract submission deadline to the first edition of the biennial Future of Magazine conference (FoM), organized by CICANT, Lusófona University research center, on 19 - 21 July 2023. In addition to the keynotes by Nico Carpentier and David Abrahamson already announced, we will be adding: a panel dedicated to the Lusophone’s magazines, an Industry Day with a Talking Circle mediated by James Hewes, from FIPP; and a second Talking Circle with Tim Holmes, Reader Emeritus of Cardiff University.

FoM 2023 is an onsite conference because we want to aim to provide a great conference experience for people attending. However, because we do not want to exclude people that have absolutely no possibility to attend in person, we will organize a remote panel as well. The live presentations during FoM 2023 will not be streamed, and there will only be time for questions from the onsite audience. However, the online participants will have access to the presentations and to special network forums. The conference's main events such as Keynotes and Talking Circles will be streamed to online participants.

At least one author will have to register for the conference, irrespective of whether it is online or in-person in Lisbon. In order to make FoM2023 more inclusive to all community members, the conference has special fees for soft currency countries.

FoM 2023 is an event that brings together a variety of researchers to share insights, ideas and discuss the current status and technical challenges the magazine medium will face in future, as well as issues relevant to the understanding of this field of studies. Papers will be presented as part of a rich conference program, including keynote talks, talking circles, and a full day dedicated to the industry.

We invite contributions that engage with the theme of "Connecting in a disconnected age," seeking to open conversations about the complex nature of the magazine concept and format across a range of media.

The absence of a material body in the digital sphere endangers a key identity of magazines, and this is the time for academia and industry to join efforts and reflect on the pertinence and the solutions for the future of the medium. The magazine incorporates an appeal to the aggregation of people looking for common interests and interconnections. In an age when people are in permanent contact, almost on alert twenty-four seven, but at the same time feeling disconnected and lonely, deepening scientific knowledge about magazine studies becomes vital.

A selection of papers presented at the conference will be published in the first edition of the International Journal of Magazine Studies, a peer-reviewed publication seeking Scopus indexing.
