The Third Media Anthropology Conference

Revisiting global/local Communities: Media, (im)mobilities and (dis)placement

Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International College, Zhuhai, China

For this interdisciplinary conference held 8-10 June 2023, we invite paper abstracts that are close to the central topic related to media, mobilities, and communities in the global context.

What is the new phrase of globalisation? The question has become a common concern of vast communities on this planet. The ‘global village’, to some extent, exists as a McLuhanian illusion mediated with fluid and fragments behind the semblance of the accord. Given the speeding up iterations of techno-driven infrastructure and digital apparatuses, is the intensified ‘hypermobility’ in the last wave of globalisation dwindling or by contrast being augmented with a new face? Encountering drastic changes and great uncertainties in the global complex, how do people represent and (re)locate themselves in everyday scenarios? Probing from a media-centred perspective, we call for an empirical revisit of global/local ‘communities’ – the binding and rebinding of people – from multifaceted approaches. Themes may include but are not limited to:

 1. Empirical studies about media and
    nationalism/multiculturalism/cosmopolitanism;
 2. (im)Mobile spatiality and temporality in the digital era;
 3. Migrants, diaspora and (dis)placement related to media studies;
 4. Ethnographic research on media, family and kinship;
 5. Subcultural groups and their media practices;
 6. Media and social diversities (i.e., race, ethnicity, gender, age,
    religion, class, disability).
 7. Media and spatial attachments to home, land and virtual corners on
    digital platforms alike;
 8. Media archaeology on the touch/abandon of specific media for
    particular social groups.
