[Commlist] International Conference Youth Resistances, identities and self-representation
Sat Jul 30 14:13:26 GMT 2022
International Conference Youth Resistances, Identities and
Self-representation
Date: 4 November 2022
University Jaume I (Castelló, Spain)
Call for contributions
We seek contributions that look into the study of youth and the changes
and transformations experienced and promoted in two specific areas:
1) youth self-representation and the construction of the idea of youth
through social networks, and 2) youth activism and socio-political
participation. This
conference is part of the activities carried out within the framework of
the project Youth Feminist Resistances to Gender (UJI-A2020-13).
Thematic axis 1: Youth self-representation and identity
The delimitation of youth identity remains complex. What it means and
how one experiences being young, as well as the representation of youth,
are crossed by ambivalences and contradictions. Its delimitat/on takes
place between
the negation of the contiguous stages —no adulthood/no childhood— and
its idealization within the framework of consumer society. We are
interested in investigating how young people define themselves and,
especially, how they self-represent and build their digital identity
through the photographs, selfies, videos, and comments they post on
social media. In the digital (re)mediations of identity, we are
especially interested in the intersectional analysis (taking into
account gender, class, race, ability…) of the psychological and bodily
narratives of youth, as well as of the self-surveillance and monitoring
strategies that they
deploy.
Thematic axis 2: Youth activism and socio-political participation
The forms of participation of young people have blurred contours and the
range of actions is widening. Beyond traditional forms (both militancy
in political parties and in student unions, action groups, etc.),
participation formulas encompass both everyday politics and consumer
activism. Youth activism has been especially visible in recent years in
feminist and queer vindications, as well as in the fight against the
environment and climate change, although Covid-19 has put a stop to some
of the initiatives in which youths were more visible. We are especially
interested in contributions that delve into the ways in which youths
politicize and participate in collective instances of action by
addressing elements such as activist trajectories, diverse modes of
socio-political participation or the affective dimension of protest.
