[Commlist] Symposium CFP - Data journalism and audience engagement in the post-pandemic era
Mon Mar 28 16:00:27 GMT 2022
*Symposium CFP: Data journalism and audience engagement in the
post-pandemic era*
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the heavy use of statistical figures and
data visualisations such as graphs and charts in news coverage has
embedded data journalism into daily reporting with great potential to
engage audiences. Data visualisations, for example, are thought to help
effectively communicate with audiences and make it easier for them to
understand government health messages and related news stories. In this
context, critical questions that arise include: 1) what values can be
added to journalism by using data in news reporting, how and to what
extent? 2) whether and if so, to what extent audiences can be engaged
with data journalism in general and data visualisations in particular?
3) Are there lessons to learn and if so, what are they? 4) What is our
vision for data journalism and audience engagement in the post-pandemic
world?
This one-day hybrid (in-person and online) symposium will take place on
June 27, 2022, at the University of Sheffield (in partnership with Reach
plc). It seeks to explore the importance of data journalism and its
potential to engage the audience and reflect on our relevant experiences
gained during the pandemic to learn lessons and discover opportunities
for future growth. We invite proposals for papers from academics and
journalism practitioners engaged in data journalism and/or audience
engagement practices. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
Data journalism and health reporting (in general and in particular with
respect to COVID-19 news reporting)(the same applies to the topics below)
