[Commlist] online conference on popular culture - Midlands Network of Popular Culture

The Midlands Network of Popular Culture is hosting a *_free_* one-day 
Zoom conference on Thu 19^th Aug. Open to everyone, the aim is to 
demonstrate the diversity of popular culture research taking place in 
the UK Midlands and beyond.

_Prof. Ken Gelder_, University of Melbourne. Paper title: 
_“Transnational Draculas”_

This paper looks at Dracula as a transnational ‘stranger’ who routinely 
migrates to other places through adaptations and re-presentations of 
Stoker’s uber vampire narrative - from the /Twilight /films to /Abraham 
Lincoln, Vampire Hunter/ to Hideyuki Kikuchi's /Vampire Hunter D/ and 
John Ajvide Lindqvist's novel /Let the Right One In/.

Amy Hondsmerk, Nottingham Trent University: _“Smocks and Simulators in 
Lockdown: A New Beginning at the Intersection of Museums and Digital 
Games?”_

Cinzia DuBois, University of Birmingham: _“Loki, Latin and Why Classics 
in Hollywood Matters”_

Laura La Beur, University of Edinburgh: _“Microplastics everywhere and 
not a fish to eat?! Language, Social Movement and Marine Debris”_

*4.20-5.20pm: Midlands Keynote Speaker*
_Dr. Will Tattersdill_, University of Birmingham: _“Towards (or away 
from) a Counterfactual Criticism”_

What can science fiction do for our reading of the Victorian canon? 
Applying the lessons of Alternate History sci-fi to the serialized 
19th-century novel offers an underdiscussed way of reading literary 
texts: the counterfactual mode.

*5.30-7pm: Roundtable Discussion: ‘Archives and Popular Culture: 
Researching and Working in Archives’*
