On June 22 the Laboratory for Social and Cognitive Informatics 
<https://scila.hse.ru/en/>(SCILA) housed at the St. Petersburg campus of 
the Higher School of Economics is organizing a workshop dedicated to the 
methodology of online experiments. It will be hosted by the Web Science 
Conference 2021.


The workshop “Designing Web-based Experiments: Sampling, Recruitment, 
and Data Collection in Social Media and other Digital Environment 
<https://hse-scila.github.io/websci21/>” is supposed to bring together 
researchers from various fields with an expertise in online experimental 
designs. Participants will be able to share their experience and discuss 
different methodological aspects of this approach such as sample 
construction, recruitment of participants, online experiment interface 
development, etc. Researchers from SCILA will also present their recent 
experimental study on the perception of fake news.

Format and time: workshop will be held online. The estimated time of the 
event is between 3 and 4 hours. We expect to start at 11 MSK (UTC+2), 
however, the exact time is yet to be confirmed.


Eligibility


Presenters: We invite scholars to present their projects at the 
workshop. To participate as a panelist, please, send us an extended 
abstract of your study to (scila.websci21 /at/ gmail.com). Full papers are not 
required. The submission deadline is*April 23*.


The application needs to meet several requirements: (1) study is based 
on an online experiment as a primary method; (2) data has been already 
collected; (3) projects that are relevant to the thematic areas of the 
WebSci conference are strongly encouraged.


The proposed presentations are expected to cover methodological aspects 
of online experiments such as but not limited to: choice of a design; 
sample construction and methods of recruitment; development of digital 
instruments for the experiment (e.g. applications, websites, games); 
factors of participants behaviour (e.g. engagement, drop-out, completion 
rate).


Participants will be allowed to discuss both research in progress and 
completed studies.


Audience: The workshop is intended for PhD students and scholars at any 
stage of their career who are interested in the online experiments. 
Participants may have varying research backgrounds (e.g. media and 
communication studies, sociology, social psychology, political science), 
but are expected to have a good command of quantitative approaches and a 
broader involvement in Web science. If you want to register for the
