Media & Diaspora in Europe

Edited by Ahmed K. Al-Rawi, Assistant Professor at Erasmus University. Rotterdam, The Netherlands and Professor Karim H. Karim, Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada.

The study of media use by diasporic communities has rapidly increased in recent years especially with the growing interest in the ways that migrant groups adapt to life in their receiving countries. Generally, diasporic media studies investigate how diasporic communities define themselves and communicate among their members through the use of media. Benedict Anderson’s (1991) concept of “imagined communities”, which he presented in the context of the nation, has been borrowed by several scholars of diasporic media to refer to diasporic communities whose members are loosely linked to each other through shared narratives about belonging to transnational communities. Diasporas have been conceptualized as imagined communities, offering a sense of identity, solidarity and strength to their members (Cohen, 1994). Another theory relevant to this edited book is Berry’s orthogonal model of acculturation (1997) as well as concepts of social and cultural integration, multiculturalism, cultural identity, and transnational networking.

The unique experiences and media uses of the many diasporas living in Europe call for the publication for a book addressing this topic. The editors of the proposed volume invite book chapters (of around 7000-8000 words) that critically address one of the topics listed below or others relevant to media and diaspora in Europe:

- Traditional media uses by diasporic groups

- Digital technology and new media applications by diasporas

- Other transnational communication networks of diasporas

- State media policies addressing immigrants’ information needs

- Community media outlets run by diasporic communities

- Media use by Eastern Europeans in Western Europe and vice versa.

Proposals of works using various methodologies are welcomed, including a variety of theoretical and empirical approaches like analytical works, state media policy studies, content analysis, surveys, and/or interviews. Once the editors have developed a book proposal and a table of contents drawn from the responses received to this call for papers, they will approach a publisher such as Routledge, Palgrave Macmillan, Lexington Press (Rowman & Littlefield), and I. B. Taurus for a book contract.

If you are interested, please send an abstract of 400-500 words to (alrawi /at/ eshcc.eur.nl) and (karim.karim /at/ carleton.ca) by the 1st of May 2014. Acceptance of proposals will be announced within 30 days, and complete chapters should be sent within four months.

Thank you,

Ahmed & Karim
