During our five-day conference, an estimated 2,200 scholars will attend
over 425 presentations representing the latest advances in the field of
communication. The conference promises to be large, diverse, and high
quality across the board. The conference theme, "Keywords in
Communication," received a tremendous response, giving us the chance to
take stock of the field of communication - its place, its core
knowledge, its terms, its debates, and its direction - in conjunction
with larger tensions related to the necessary and sometimes risky growth
and expansion of existing fields of knowledge.
This year's conference combines familiar programming options with
several innovative features, including tours of Chicago's diverse
neighborhoods. A closing reception on Sunday evening at the elegant
Murphy Auditorium in the American Academy of Physicians, and a closing
plenary on Monday morning.
The plenaries promise to draw interest across ICA's membership. The
opening plenary, scheduled for the evening of Thursday, May 21, will
feature US Federal Communications Commissioner and acting Chair Michael
Copps, on the topic "Keywords in Regulation, or How the FCC and Others
See Regulation in the Digital Age." Moderated by Bob McChesney, the
session will also feature responses by an international panel of
experts-Robin Mansell, Joseph Torres and Georgette Wang. The closing
plenary, scheduled for the morning of Monday, May 25, will feature
acclaimed Canadian author and journalist Naomi Klein, who will speak on
"Communication and Shock Resistance: The Role of Narrative in Meeting
the Current Crises."
The Conference will continue our tradition of hosting simultaneous
mini-plenaries, including panels featuring the work of recently selected
ICA fellows and panels on the respective keywords of "Communication" and
"The Message." New this year are two mini-plenaries on topics of
professional interest to ICA members, including "Funding for Research"
and "Alternative Modes of Academic Work."
An outstanding lineup of preconference workshops will address, "Mobile
2.0: Beyond Voice," "India and Communication Studies," "The Future is
Prologue: New Media, New Histories?," "Affective Audiences: Analyzing
Media Users, Consumers, and Fans," "Media Ethics," 'Global Communication
and Social Change: Research Agendas and Directions," "Religion,
Politics, and Media: How Do We 'Get Religion' in Leftist Scholarship,"
"Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM)," "Doctoral Consortium:
Interdisciplinary Research and Teaching in Organization Communication,"
"Addressing Communication Keywords Communicatively: Multi-Context
Exemplars and Interrogations of the Uses of Dervin's Sense-Making
Methodology," "Fair Use and Academic Freedom: Asserting Fair Use Rights
in Communication," and "Corporate Social Responsibility and
Communication."
